"Vagifacials". Exactly what it sounds like

Updated: Jul 5, 2022

Skin Care for ‘Down There’ Is Trending—Here’s What You Need to Know

When most people think of a skincare routine, they typically think of cleansing their face, using a serum or two, applying moisturizer. More likely than not, you probably haven't given much thought to giving your bits down there a skincare routine of its own, the question is, do we really need a 10-step skincare routine for your bits ? In the name of investigative beauty journalism, and the glow below, I tried it… and the answer is no you don’t need a 10-step routine. But you just might have some concerns and you may want to try a few things so here we go….

Firstly “vulvar skincare”— doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue, does it? Some food for thought though, you don’t clean, hydrate and moisturize your face with the same bar of soap that you use on your feet or on your arms, right? It’s sort of that same philosophy, it’s just giving the same sort of hygienic attention and love to the area that’s equally as sensitive.

Second, I know what you’re all thinking: OB/GYNs are going to have a field day with this one! I mean, haven’t women always been taught that the v is “self-cleaning” With that in mind, I reached out to both an OB/GYN and a dermatologist to get their thoughts on skincare for down there, fully expecting them to say it was a scam. But that didn’t happen. At all. The doctors I spoke with are truly excited about the rise of more v or down there care products.

I absolutely embrace the change women have taken on the outlook of skincare for down there, I am enthusiastic about the fact that many of today’s intimate innovations reject the aesthetic-driven products and procedures of years past. Think: bleaching, perfumed cleansers, and even what the OB/GYN calls “vagifacials,” which are exactly what they sound like.

What is a vagifacial?

For those of you new to the concept, the vagifacial is a spa treatment performed on the vulva. It does not actually deal with the inner stories.

What is the purpose of a vagifacial?

A vagifacial treats ingrown hairs, removes dead skin cells, smooths bumps around bikini line, prevents acne, helps with hyperpigmentation, all to maintain healthy, smooth and hydrated skin in the v area.

What does the procedure consist of ?

A vagifacial is typically a 50-minute treatment, which includes a cleanse, mild enzyme exfoliant, extractions of ingrown hairs, followed by a custom mask, completed with a skin brightening serum or spot treatment. A light chemical peel can also be done in this area.

When should you get a vajacial?

Vagifacials are usually follow up treatments to help deal with side effects of hair removal on the v and bikini area. You can do your wax and Vagifacialon the same day but it’s recommended to do a Vagifacialup to 7 days post shaving or wax.

What are some benefits of a vagifacial?

Vagifacial can help with evening out skin tone around the bikini and get rid of bacteria and skin-brightening treatments to lessen discoloration and hyperpigmentation. Helps with down there skin care, preventing irritation from waxing/shaving. The vagifacial also promotes body positivity.

The big question is can we do these at home?

OFCOURSE! You know I love a DIY

1. Start on cleansed skin

Although the “your bits down there” are self-cleansing organs, and it is important to tend to our “bits” with a mild wash or soap that is approved for “down there”.

When it comes to cleansing, it is important to use products in the 4 to 5 pH range so that your bacteria is not thrown off.

2. Exfoliate

remove dead skin cells and prevent in-grown hairs. A little goes a long way and if used one to two times a week, it really helps to alleviate any ingrown hairs that can happen from shaving.

3. Use tweezers to get rid of ingrown hairs

Please don’t use the same tweezers you use on your face or to remove a splinter – your v needs its own pair for sure – and make sure they are clean!

4. Apply a mask - For a brightening effect, you can use a yoghurt or honey mask

5. Apply aloe vera gel or coconut oil to calm and moisturise the skin

While researching I found this cool little gadget called “ A Between Legs Self-Check Mirror

Kitted with an LED lights and its shaped perfectly to hold between the thighs, this innovative OBGYN-approved self-check mirror make it easy to apply serums, moisturizer, lubricants and creams while sitting or standing up.
