All about PRP, Microneedling and the "Vampire Facial"
PRP may sound like something straight out of a science fiction novel – but its known as liquid gold….and it’s amazing! It’s been used in the hospital system and in sports medicine for its effective wound healing properties since the 1970s.
The natural capacity of the skin to produce collagen decreases with age due to various other factors. That’s why as an esthetician I think anyone can benefit from micro needling especially when combined with PRP to improve the overall tone, vitality, and glow of their skin. The benefits go on—it also helps to firm, improve texture, shrink the appearance of pores, blur acne scarring, and stimulate collagen production and cell turnover.
PRP has been used for decades for wound and soft tissue healing by orthopaedic surgeons and wound care physicians. However, more recently, there has been a large amount of research and clinical evidence demonstrating PRP’s regenerative properties for the treatment of scars, minimizing pores, fine wrinkles, volume loss, hair loss, and skin rejuvenation.
This is due to its ability to naturally rejuvenate the skin and repair the signs of ageing by using our own platelet rich blood cells. Your blood is essentially made up of four components; red blood cells, white blood cells, the plasma and the platelets aka the liquid gold.
WHO IS IT FOR?
PRP is great for anyone who is concerned by any areas of skin that are starting to lose elasticity and volume. It’s also a highly effective method for stimulating your body’s cells to produce new, healthy-looking skin. It is extremely effective for that delicate under eye area where often clients notice signs of ageing first and where no laser can be used. It is also used to increase the structural integrity and health of the skin, particularly sun damaged skin.

WHAT TO EXPECT WITH MICRONEEDLING AND PRP?
In my experience, Dr Morkar first gave me some context on how the procedure is done, at the same time we discussed my concerns. He then showed me the tools he was going to use and was explaining what they did. I knew exactly what to expect (considering it's a “bloody” facial).
Dr Morkar applied numbing cream on my face and neck so I wouldn’t feel the re-injecting of the plasma and the micro needles. Then samples of my blood was drawn (while my face was numbing) and after that inserted the blood samples it into a centrifuge, which is a medical machine that separates the red blood cells from the plasma. (A note that all centrifuges are not the same. Please ensure your centrifuge corresponds to the procedure you are doing).
After a few minutes of separating, the test tube samples are taken out of the centrifuge and you can instantly notice the separated PRP (clear, yellow fluid), red blood cells, and white blood cells. It’s often referred to as “liquid gold.”
The "liquid gold" in then re-injected into and all over my face. (I promise you dont feel a thing)
The left over PRP is then applied on my face and neck, he then began using the micro needle pen, puncturing my face with microneedles.
A big concern for me is my under eye area, (which I am sure it is for most) I have slight dark discolouration as well as what I like to refer to as "trenches" (when you know you know)
Dr Morkar suggested that he can inject the remaing PRP into my under eye area. I thought this “surprise and delight” moment was so cool, (as I am against cosmetic filler treatments) and of course I took him up on it. He then injected my PRP with a cannula needle under my eyes, and wala INSTANT GRATIFICATION!
